Welcome to The British Columbia Society for Public Education website. We are a volunteer not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting public education in British Columbia.
We carry out research and other activities aimed at providing accurate and accessible information to students, parents, the general public and decision-makers.
We believe all children and society benefit from a strong, diverse and equitable public school system and we encourage parents and others to support public education.
NEW November 2009
BC Society of Public Education Director, Helesia Luke, recently moderated a community forum in Langley BC about the significant debt the school district is facing in a year of additional funding cuts. Click here to read an article in the Langley Advance from November 24.

While two of the provincial government’s stated goals are to “Make British Columbia the best-educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent.” and to “Build the best system of support in Canada for persons with disabilities, those with special needs, children at risk, and seniors.” it is hard to imagine how that will happen when funding for public education and important services for children, youth and their families is constantly being cut.
This Friday, November is the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child & National Child Day in Canada. To commemorate the day, please visit Moms on the Move and sign their petition urging Premier Campbell to honour his promises to BC’s children.
On November 24, First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition will be releasing their Report Card on Child Poverty in BC holding a Provincial Day of Action on Child Poverty. Write a letter to your MP and MLA to urge action on child poverty in BC.
October 2009
18 locations are now confirmed for MOMs October 28 Provincial Day of Action.
There are 18 actions planned across the province, from Sooke to Prince George, and from Mayne Island to Invermere, with many stops in between. But some local groups are very small and they urgently need your support! Please help send a strong message to Victoria!
We must send a strong message to Premier Campbell about reversing cuts and honouring his promises to build the best system of supports in Canada for BC’s children with special needs.
Visit the MOMs Website for information and find the protest location in your community.
Share this notice widely and contact MomsOnTheMove(at)telus.net if you wish to add another location or join one listed !
See you on the 18th!
